Sydney Round Two, New Years Eve!
With flights booked for New Zealand leaving on New Years day, we
headed back into Sydney a couple days early to visit the Temple and
find a good spot for New Years Eve overlooking the world renowned
Sydney Harbor fireworks extravaganza!
From our previous time in Sydney we had a few ideas of some possibly
good spots we wanted to check out for the fireworks. Upon further
inspection we realized we'd need to camp out overnight and be packed
in with thousands of people in those places. We've both done that in
years past at other big locations and decided that we'd like to opt
out of that kinda mess this year.
We were thinking of parking in a local parking garage and met the
security guard there. His name was Emron.
He was really nice and said we should park outside o n the street
because it was cheaper and if we parked in a specific spot his
security cameras could keep an eye on our car. We ran into Emron
several times over the next day or so leading up to the fireworks and
talked about all sorts of stuff. He told us good places to eat at in
the area and said he could probably get us a good s pot for the
fireworks with some of his security guard friends if we didn't find
another spot we liked.
The morning of New Years Eve we had stopped in to a hotel to use their
bathroom and sit in the lobby for a bit to charge the computer. One of
the front desk people asked if we knew where we'd be for the fireworks
and upon hearing that we were undecided shared with us a great place
that many locals go. It's up on the top of a parking garage that's
been converted into a park next to the Kings Cross hill overlooking
the Harbor and Downtown. He said it didn't start to fill up till
evening and had a great view without the crowds and alcohol of other
locations.
We went and checked it out. The view looked good and they don't even
open up the park till afternoon so we decided that would be a good
place for us and we could enjoy the rest of the day an d come back
early afternoon to get in line for a good spot.
We used our new found time to take a stroll through the city to the
movie theater and caught a showing of the latest installment in the
Mission Impossible series, Ghost Protocol. We both enjoy a good action
flick and had fun.
Afterwards we walked back to the park and got in line to wait for the
park to open. When they let us in I ran around like a man on a
mission, or a mad man, to find the best spot and after ch ecking out
various spots we came to the conclusion that the original spot we saw
was great and luckily were able to still claim a piece of it.
We spent the next several hours playing cards, snacking on food and talking.
There were two fireworks displays, one for families earlier on at 9pm
and then the major event at midnight.
They really go all out here. This was the biggest and best fireworks
display I've ever seen. They had three different spots spread
throughout the harbor launching the same fireworks s equence to give
everyone a similar experience all along the harbor. At the same time
they had another major display going off all over the Sydney Harbor
Bridge and launching from the top of several of the downtown
high-rises. It was incredible! Sydney was a great place t o spend New
Years Eve.
I'm really looking forward to an amazing 2012 with Julie!
